ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Ted Lazaris
Resides in Slinger, Wisconsin with his wife and family. His books are a means of escaping your daily routine. He likes to think of his books as modern day fables for people of all ages.

Looking back from the story outline to the finished novel. “DragonMan: The Adventures of Luke Starr,” was a wondrous journey with many long and winding roads leading to the birth of a new superhero.

The journey began in February of 2001, and by June of 2002, I finished the first book. It started out as a children’s book but quickly evolved into a novel for all ages.

One thing I’ll always remember while writing about the fictional hero, was the tragic events of 9/11. I was watching the devastation unfold as it happened on TV asfile:///C:/Users/tedlazar/Documents/dragonman/1st.html so many of us did.

On that day I stopped writing and took time to mourn like all Americans.

I remember walking the streets of Milwaukee, WI. As I did, I couldn’t help notice the fear in peoples’ eyes… caused by the terrorist attacks and the uncertainty and real probability of more attacks yet to come.

But those looks of fear soon turned to looks of anger as I watched former President George Bush speak in one of our countries darkest moments, he said, while choking back tears. “We will find these evil doers and justice will served, “I’ve got a job to do and I’m going to do it.”

At that precise moment I felt we went from a people filled with fear and anger to what we truly stand for, Americans united.

You could see the change in people every where, from the look of hope and renewed purpose on their faces, to the thousands of American flags flying proudly everywhere.

Soon afterward I began writing again… it was time to press on.

Author Interview

Pageonelit.com: Where did you grow up and was reading and writing a part of your life? Who were your earliest influences and why?
Ted Lazaris: I was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and to tell you the truth reading and writing wasn’t a real big part of my life at the time. I was the kind of kid that spent as much time as I could outside, mostly exploring in the wooded areas around where I lived. However I did enjoy reading Dickens and Twain and have always been influenced by a good story no matter who wrote it. I feel authors generally fall into three categories. Some are good writers, some are good storytellers and then some are exceptionally good at both … they create works of art … those are the great ones,

AUTHOR BIO :
It would be easy to say that Ted Lazaris has led a charmed life; but the fact is that, along with some amazing bits of luck, Ted's considerable success is due to a lot of plain, hard work. "I've worn a lot of different hats," says Ted when asked about his experiences. "I've worked in retail sales, the medical field as an anaesthesia technician, in the printing industry, and I have even owned my own business, among other things."

But the "hat" that Ted enjoys best is that of a novelist. "I like to think of my books as modern day fables for the young and the young at heart", he says about "Dragon Man, The Adventures of Luke Starr" and "Dragon Man and the Poseidon Encounter", his two published novels. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Ted grew up playing in the woods near his home. By his own admission, he wasn't too interested in reading when he was a boy. "I was the kind of kid that spent as much time as I could outside," he explains. "Nevertheless, I did enjoy reading Dickens and Twain," he adds. When asked about the source of inspiration for his books and about his fertile imagination, Lazaris responds that both his writing and his ideas probably had their roots in an event that happened during his early childhood.

"I was 8 years old," he recounted, "and, being a boy that loved to play in the woods, I climbed a very tall tree. Somehow I lost my grip and I fell. During the fall, it seemed to me that time was suddenly suspended—as if it had come to halt. I saw a bright light and a voice that seemed to emanate from it that assured me I was not going to die." That singular experience imbued in him wonderment at the unseen and undiscovered mysteries of life.
Ted's life again gave signs of apparently being charmed when at 17, while disposing of cardboard in an incinerator, shotgun shells that had been inadvertently thrown into the fire went off with a terrific blast, spraying pellets and shrapnel in every direction. "They told me I should have been killed in the blast," Ted remembered. Yet, it was evident that something or someone was working overtime to protect him and inform him of important happenings in his life because some years later another incident signalled that another important event was going to happen.

His life had followed an apparently normal course for Ted: he got a job, he married and had children; but then, one day, when he was 27, he suddenly woke in the middle of the night. Again he saw a blindingly bright light before him. "What's wrong," his wife asked, alarmed by the way he'd sat up.

"Someone in our family has just died," he responded. The next day, a phone call informed him of the very sad news: his aunt, with whom he had been very close, had died. But the most astounding part was that she had died on the night, and at the very same time that Ted had awaken to see the blinding shaft of light.

That wasn't the last time Ted had such an amazing experience. A couple of years later, as he was driving in downtown Milwaukee accompanied by his wife, the image of his wife's younger brother suddenly appeared before him. Shaken by the sight, Ted had to pull over to the curb. "What's wrong, Ted?" his wife asked.
"We'd better go to your mother's house," he answered quietly. Upon arrival at his mother-in-law's home, Ted and his wife were informed that her younger brother had died of a gunshot wound.
The years after that occurrence passed uneventfully. Ted worked at various jobs and he and his wife went about the chores of any normal family: raising kids, working diligently, buying a home.

Yet, once in a while, strange things would happen. "One day," Ted remembers, "I saw a white feather falling from the sky. It fell right in front of me. My mother had recently had surgery; I suddenly had the intuition that something had happened to her." He said to his wife, "I think my mother has just died." And, in fact, it was true: his mother had just passed away.

Ted's incredible luck and extraordinary intuitions might have remained just a curiosity in his life but for the fact that one day, while out shopping, he was drawn to a book he saw on the shelf of a store. It was L. Ron Hubbard's "Scientology: A New Slant on Life". Giving in to a compulsion to buy it, he took it home and placed it on his nightstand; "But," he recalls, "I did not open it or attempt to read it."

Then, during the nights of the following days, he began to experience unusual flows of perspiration, as if he were racked by anxiety. As if to relieve an unexplainable impulse he began to write. The result was the first of his two marvelous Dragon Man fables. "The strange thing about this is," he says musingly, "I never aspired to become a novelist." Yet, as they say, the rest is history because Ted Lazaris is now the proud author of not only one, but two refreshingly entertaining books which have been not only well received but have been optioned by executive producer Mario Domina, President of Thunderball Films, who will develop screenplays from the published works as a Feature Franchise.

Ted Lazaris has promised his readers that he will continue to develop the series. He knows his public so there will be more "good fun" in future books which will feature, as he as said, fast-paced adventures in which his hero, Dragon Man, faces the malevolent forces in the eternal, epic struggle between right and wrong, good and evil. Ted said that after he had finished his second novel, he had finally begun to read the L. Ron Hubbard book. It will be interesting to see what effect, if any, that has on Ted Lazaris' amazing and eventful life and writing career.

DragonMan song nominated and wins Platinum Auddy Award

The theme song by Ted Lazaris entitled, "DarkSide of Heaven" for our feature DragonMan was nominated and won the Platinum Auddy Award.

DarkSide of Heaven” is the new theme song from the project, DragonMan by Ted Lazaris. Wide in scope, diverse in meaning, the song delivers on a variety of levels that will please fans across multiple genres. Immediately, “Dark Side of Heaven” captures attention. Starting with gentle guitar harmonics and a tastefully synthesized string ensemble, the song takes off only a few seconds later when powerful drumming and heavy metal style guitars rev up the musical intensity. All this is in due service to prepare the listener to be stunned when the vocals come in and the music softens. “I got their blood on my hands” sings the ascending chorus, dutifully repeated and accentuated three times in a country music tonality. Yes, there’s a slight country twang mixed with melodic hard rock/metal music for some surprisingly affective and pleasing results!

As the soundtrack for the yet to be released movie DragonMan, the song conjures up images of loss and redemption in an audio setting that swings between two poles. One can only imagine what the movie will be like, but from the information accompanying “Dark Side of Heaven” it seems interesting. In short, it is the story of a teenage boy named Luke Starr that has unique abilities to venture into the psychological realms of an alternate inner space called Spellville. After exchanging blood with a dragon, Luke becomes part dragon himself and assumes the role of Dragon Man, yet his newfound powers are in somewhat of a conflicted state and Luke wrestles within himself to find balance. Ted Lazaris’ theme song does a great job of articulating this struggle both in a lyrical sense and a musical one.

The central motif and mantra-like chant is the “I got their blood on my hands” chorus that through repetition becomes ingrained in the mind and will definitely draw the curious listener in deeper. While “Dark Side of Heaven” is excellently produced and executed, it doesn’t offer too much in the way of innovation except for the aforementioned country/metal mix. However the song works brilliantly as a story telling vehicle for the DragonMan movie and will surely add to the richness of the final project.   Review by Stafford Davis.

Everything about this song is big and almost melodramatic. The huge production values, the wide dynamic variety in this straight-ahead rock song, the superior musicianship across the board, the dramatic lyrics, and the convincing delivery of the vocalist all combine to make this tune very appropriate for soundtracks, theme songs, or other commercial applications. The song doesn't break new ground musically, but that's why I think it has a broad appeal. It's easy to understand from a composition point-of-view and the vocalist also has excellent diction which makes the words easy to understand. This song really is radio-ready or ready for any other project that needs this genre of music. Keep up the great work!

FWO-Int’l member goes Hollywood
By IN H ouse Staff

On with the chase!

Freelance Writing Organization International (FWO-Int'l) member Ted Lazaris, with the help of InkTip, has had his DragonMan series picked up for the big screen.

The published novels and screenplays were exclusively optioned by executive producer Mario Domina and his company, ThunderBall Films, through a co-production agreement with creator/writer Lazaris and his production start-up, DragonMan Productions.

The novel caught the eye of First Lady Laura Bush. She commented in a letter of commendation, "I admire your efforts, through writing adventure stories, to encourage people of all ages to enjoy reading."

Lazaris passes along some thoughts to fellow FWO/INniks:

"One thing your readers should know about getting their book or script discovered on InkTip is; they must have it copyrighted and if it's just the book they should indicate that it is for adaptation.

"Also try to keep their logline brief but well thought out. Remember the logline is the first thing a producer is going to see. Next, they'll look at the synopsis, so make sure they give it everything they've got.

"I found that looking at other movie reviews, as well as TV Guide write-ups, was helpful. InkTip also has a variety of both your readers can look at and study to help them out if they need the help."
